The Discontented Gopher is a story about making and living with tough decisions. At a young age, Zikky the Gopher must leave his mother’s burrow and choose his path into the future. Riches abound, adventure beckons, and danger lurks around every corner. Ultimately, wisdom is hard earned in this allegorical story.
Author L. Frank Baum was inspired to write this tale about the choice between riches and happiness, as well as other fables and short stories, by the people, prairie animals, and scenery he knew in Aberdeen, Dakota Territory, before the turn of the last century. Published now for the first time in book form and fully illustrated by Carolyn Digby Conahan, this is a wise and wonderful story for children of all ages.
The Discontented Gopher is the first book in the Prairie Tales series of children’s books. The next book in the series will be Zitkala-Sa’s Dance in a Buffalo Skull.
