    Paula M. Nelson is associate professor of history at the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, and author of award-winning works about west-river South Dakota. An authority on western homesteading and women’s history, she is author of After the West Was Won: Homesteaders and Town Builders in Western South Dakota.
